New Orleans City Council Approves Zoning Change for Billboards WITHOUT Community Input
By motion of District E Councilperson Oliver Thomas, the City Council approved a zoning change for Eastern New Orleans allowning billboards, without ANY input from us and other community members. According to Thomas, these billboards will be along the I-10 Corridor. Many of our residents are opposed to billboards being behind their homes on the service road which will create distracted drivers, add clutter, provide blinking lights into their homes, and adversely affect the property value of our Spring Lake properties.

LET COUNCILPERSON OLIVER THOMAS KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS ISSUE BY SENDING A NOTE TO HIM @ Oliver.Thomas@nola.gov. Please copy our Spring Lake account (SpringLakeNeighbors@yahoo.com).

$61.5M AWARD
NEW ORLEANS EAST 1-10 SERVICE ROADS WALKING AND BIKING CONNECTIVITY PROJECT
SLNA President and Vice-President, Karen and Gail, respectively along with community leaders from Kenilworth and Lake Willow, recently met with Councilman Oliver Thomas regarding the proposed plan for a pedestrian bridge over the Interstate at Mayo Road and other plans for the $61.5M award. While we are most appreciative of this award, we shared with Councilperson Thomas our opposition to the pedestrian bridge and the proposed walking and cycling paths along I-10 Service Road. Councilman Thomas shared with us that he had already received communications from New Orleans East residents regarding their opposition to these pedestrian bridges and walking paths along the I-10 Service Road. He also concurred with our position regarding the pedestrian bridge. We are most grateful to those Spring Lake residents who sent email messages to Councilperson Thomas regarding their opposition to the pedestrian bridge over the Interstate at the Mayo Road Intersection and the walking paths behind the homes on I-10 Service Road. We invite other residents to share their position with Councilman Thomas and other local leaders. By letting your voice be heard, you make all our voices stronger. You can find the contact information for Councilman Thomas as well as our At- Large Councilpersons-- Helena Moreno and J.P. Morrell-- here: Councilmembers - New Orleans City Council (nola.gov) Councilmembers - New Orleans City Council (nola.gov) If you have already sent an email to any elected official, kindly consider sharing a copy of your message with us. Also, if you send an email to an elected official regarding this issue, kindly copy the Spring Lake account (SpringLakeNeighbors@yahoo.com). This information will be helpful to us as we continue to meet with elected officials regarding this matter. We still must all work together to ensure that our community is not damaged by the construction of the proposed pedestrian bridge. TRICENTENNIAL NEIGHBORHOOD GRANT

In January of 2018, the Spring Lake Neighborhood Association Board responded to the City's Request for Proposals (RFP) by submitting an application for a Tricentennial Neighborhood Grant. Members of the Board brainstormed ideas, thought about our needs, and also realized that Night Out is the time when we all come together.

With these facts in mind, President Karen Comeaux and Vice-President Gail Armant went to work and put pen to paper; or better said in this Tricentennial era, they put fingers to the keyboard. A proposal was submitted, requesting the maximum amount of $1000.

The proposal included the restoration of the Spring Lake entrance sign at Morrison Road, the creation of a special Tricentennial marker and the unveiling of the marker at Night Out Against Crime in October, 2018. It would not be a New Orleans celebration without a second line band; therefore, a Jazz Band was included in the proposal.

On March 1, 2018, we received a congratulatory letter from the 2018 Foundation informing us that we had been awarded a Tricentennial Neighborhood Grant. We were awarded the maximum amount possible, $1000.

The implementation of the grant was concluded at the Night Out Against Crime. It was a perfect evening and enjoyed by Spring Lake residents, invited guests, police and fire officers, and elected officials.
This Tricentennial Marker was created through a collaboration of members of the Spring Lake Tricentennial committee (Karen Comeaux, Gail Armant, Wayne Lemelle and Phillip Reed). The City's official Tricentennial logo was used as the focal point.

It was erected at the Morrison Road entrance of Spring Lake subdivision on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.
